INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS

At St Nicholas' School, our Infants are encouraged to be inquisitive and apply the skills they learn to investigate the world around them.

We balance breadth of curriculum with small classes, ensuring that every child receives individual attention and is able to progress at their own pace.

We strongly believe that academic success is embedded within a positive attitude towards learning, reflecting the core values that are incorporated within the curriculum and referred to as THRIVE.

Our infant curriculum is constantly evolving to ensure variety and incremental growth.

"The quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent.

Children in the EYFS get off to an excellent start in their education and by the end of Year 2, most are working well above age related expectations."

RECEPTION CURRICULUM

Our Reception curriculum continues with the established Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS Areas of Learning and Development) and we personalise our teaching and learning approach to cater to children's individual needs, encouraging growth, supporting in areas of challenge, and empowering them to reach their full potential.

Taught by specialist full-time, qualified teachers in their field, focused teaching is balanced with carefully guided play activities that allow the children to explore, investigate and consolidate their developing knowledge, skills and attitudes.

YEARS 1 AND 2 CURRICULUM

At St Nicholas' we balance breadth of curriculum with small classes, ensuring that every child receives individual attention and is able to progress at their own pace.

At Key Stage 1, core subjects are taught by the class teacher and subject specialist teachers for PE, Swimming, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Performing Arts and Forest School.

This is excellent preparation for Junior School, so that by the end of Year 2, our Infant pupils are ready to move onto the next stage of their educational journey.

LEARNING SUPPORT

Curriculum Support at St Nicholas’ School is designed to give our pupils a boost in their learning and covers a spectrum of needs, from support within the curriculum to helping those with individual learning difficulties or where English is their second language.

Pupils’ need for support can vary depending on the topic studied and we aim to provide for individual requirements as they become apparent.  As a result, Curriculum Support groups are flexible.

Curriculum Support can take several forms: small group lessons on a weekly basis, a short intensive programme or, for those not requiring formal support, there is an opportunity to practise mental mathematics and spelling skills.  Pupils are recommended for support by the teachers, based on their performance in testing and during normal lessons.

Parents are always informed before formal Curriculum Support lessons are started, though children may be encouraged to attend ‘top-up’ sessions on a more informal basis.

OUR 3-WAY PARTNERSHIP WITH YOU

We believe in fostering a strong child-parent-school partnership.

Through parent evenings, coffee mornings and our Super Curriculum, we share regular updates, current topics and themes, books we are reading, learning techniques and 'next steps' to support and educate our parents in their child's learning journey.
