Infants

Infant pupil in spring

At St Nicholas' School, our infants are encouraged to be inquisitive and apply the skills they learn to investigate the world around them.

Our co-educational Infant Department have their own purpose-built building called Branksomewood - a dedicated primary school building on our main school site in Church Crookham.  In this safe, secure environment, infant pupils develop the abilities to listen, question, be creative, solve problems and co-operate with others.

It is important that children learn through play at this stage of their life.  Learning is planned within a topic-based framework, with individual topics being studied each half term.

Reception Curriculum

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, there are seven areas of learning;

Three Prime areas:
Communication and Language
Physical Development
Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

These underpin four specific areas:
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design

Years 1 and 2 Curriculum

At Key Stage 1 (Years 1 - 2) infant school pupils are taught the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, along with others such as History, Geography, Art, RS, DT and ICT, by the class teacher. Music, PE and French, in Years 1 and 2, are taught by specialist teachers.

At St Nicholas' Infant School we balance breadth of curriculum with small classes, ensuring that every child receives individual attention and is able to progress at their own pace. We also offer Forest School as part of the curriculum.

This is excellent preparation for Junior School, so that by the end of Year 2, our infant pupils are ready to move onto the next stage of their education in Junior School.

Infant pupils also take part in Forest School as part of our co-curricular programme at St Nicholas' School. Please click on the box below to read about this further.
