Infants

In Art the Infant children are encouraged to experiment with a variety of different artistic techniques and mediums. This develops their technical skills as well as their creativity and self-expression. They learn to recognise and appreciate different artists' work, and paint in the style of famous artists such as Monet and Van Gogh. There are extensive displays of the children's artwork throughout the Infant Department, and each child's work is seen to be valued and special.

In the Branksomewood Infant Department pupils in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive one class music lesson per week with a specialist music teacher.

The children enjoy singing and using a variety of percussion instruments from around the world. This introduces them to the elements of dynamics, rhythm and pitch. The children sing a variety of songs and hymns in assemblies. These often have actions which add to their enjoyment.

In Years 1 and 2, pupils also receive curriculum violin lessons from the Head of Strings. By the end of Year 2 many become very proficient. The experience of learning to play a string instrument is good for their co-ordination and also aids their intellectual development.

The children learn to express themselves both individually and in groups, and all the classes perform short poems and plays in their class assemblies each term. At Christmas the children present their Nativity plays which are a highlight of the year and are thoroughly enjoyed by all the parents and many grandparents too! The Performing Arts Centre gives the children in Years 1 and 2 the opportunity to demonstrate their talents on a proper stage, with professional lighting and tiered seating for the audience. The Nursery will continue to perform in the secure and more intimate environment of Branksomewood Hall.

Children in St Nicholas' School Infant Department benefit from being taught by specialist Physical Education teachers.
The emphasis is on learning all the basic skills required to develop a healthy attitude to being active. Fun and enjoyment are key aspects of the lessons.

The children have three lessons each week and follow structured programmes in a variety of activities including gymnastic and dance activities, ball skills, running and jumping events. They learn to obey rules and develop their listening and sequencing skills. They begin to play as part of a team as competitive games are introduced.
Year 1 and 2 children have swimming lessons at the local sports centre in Fleet.

Each year there is a sports day on our Church Crookham site; all our primary children take part in various races. Parents and friends are invited to attend.
