STEAM
ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AND INNOVATION
Our aim at St Nicholas’ School is to encourage all pupils to open their eyes to the world around them, becoming more curious about how things work and developing a desire to delve deeper into the relationships between things.
In their study of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, St Nicholas’ pupils gain a sophisticated awareness of ideas and information, preparing them not only for the rigours of examinations, but for their futures and lifelong learning.
We believe Introducing STEAM concepts to our pupils at a young age is crucial for their development. It helps them better understand the modern world around them, which can help build confidence and self-esteem and enable them to thrive.
As well as studying the traditional areas of biology, chemistry, physics, computer science and mathematics, pupils’ voyages of discovery will take them through human biology, plant science, ecology, and the ever-expanding fields of genetics and biotechnology. Cross-curricular links with PE and geography are also explored.
St Nicholas’ pupils develop skills beyond subject knowledge: an attention to detail, risk-taking, logical thinking and the ability to analyse and evaluate evidence. We encourage pupils to constantly question, not only during their own investigations, practical work and application of new knowledge, but also when studying concepts that have been part of the fabric of science for centuries.
We will help your child discover real-world applications, spark their creativity and develop 21st-century skills including media and technology literacy, productivity, social skills, communication, flexibility and initiative. Regardless of your child’s career aspirations, these skill sets will go a long way in preparing them for their future.
During our annual STEAM Week, all pupils are involved in a number of STEAM activities and throughout the year have the chance to hear guest speakers and to visit a range of STEAM settings, including local venues and those further afield.
