Performing Arts

Senior pupils performing in drama production

PASSION AND INCLUSION

Performing Arts at St Nicholas’ School forms a varied and exciting part of our broad curriculum, in which all pupils from Nursery to Seniors are encouraged to explore and participate.

Alongside trips, workshops and a host of co-curricular clubs, pupils can take part in our inclusive school productions, developing the confidence that comes with performing in front of an audience for the budding actors and dancers, and learning new skills for those who are more interested in the technical and backstage aspects.

At St Nicholas’ School the Performing Arts Department collaborates closely with the Music Department on school musical performances and benefits enormously from our exceptional Performing Arts Centre, The Pritchard Hall, with adaptable proscenium arch stage, professional-level technical equipment and excellent views of the stage provided from the raked seating on the lower and upper floors. Our excellent theatre space is also used by professional visiting theatre companies, giving our pupils a true insight into the theatre industry.

PERFORMING ARTS IN NURSERY AND INFANTS

Whilst learning to express themselves both individually and in groups within their weekly Performing Arts lessons, our Nursery and Infant pupils have many opportunities to develop and demonstrate their skills in assemblies, Nativity plays, and a summer concert performed in the Pritchard Hall.

PERFORMING ARTS IN JUNIORS AND SENIORS

Junior School pupils perform together in two productions each year, learning how to perform on stage and to an adult audience. Previous Junior Productions have included The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and a host of annual Christmas musicals and plays.

Senior School pupils have the opportunity to participate in the annual Senior Production. Productions are welcoming and inclusive and not just for those who enjoy performing on stage; pupils can be part of the backstage crew, working with sound, lighting, props, costumes and make-up. In recent years our Senior pupils have staged annual productions including The Sound of Music and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

In addition, a highlight of the co-curricular calendar is our annual Inter-House Drama competition where all Junior and Senior pupils come together in their houses to perform, maintaining and building on an atmosphere of inclusion, directed and choreographed by our Year 11 pupils.

“We loved The Sound of Music performance last night and were so impressed with the girls - excellent singing, not a single word or line forgotten and super acting - your drama team should be so proud of such an exceptional achievement"
