CREATIVITY AND EXPERIMENTATION

A sure sign of how well Art and Textiles is supported at St Nicholas’ School, is in just how much it adorns the walls, corridors and classrooms. In fact, it’s so embedded in school life, that you’d be hard pressed to find a space without it!

Our key aim is to drive pupils’ creativity by instilling a lifelong love and passion for the arts, whilst encouraging individuality in the development of the pupil’s own artistic style. At every level we celebrate each pupil’s potential and encourage questioning, experimentation and curiosity.

Our purpose-built Art and Textiles Centre hosts specialist studios in art, textiles and design technology, providing a happy, supportive and stimulating environment where pupils learn about a vast array of techniques, materials and processes including drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles, ceramics and 3D. Our pupils enjoy lively and stimulating lessons where they are given opportunities to develop self-expression, imagination and creativity.

With textiles being one of the top industries in the world and linked to countless career opportunities, our girls at St Nicholas’ School are very fortunate to be introduced to the subject early in their learning journey. Pupils learn key practical skills such as creative hand and machine sewing, pattern cutting, draping on a mannequin and many sophisticated decorative and embellishment techniques through the designing and making of a variety of art textile products.

St Nicholas' School offers our pupils a wealth of co-curricular opportunities to explore a broad range of mixed media and learning styles through a variety of clubs, workshops, local and overseas trips. Pupils can work individually or in groups producing pieces for enjoyment, competitions, local events and props for school productions. Art tuition is also available for our junior and senior pupils with our Artist-in-Residence.
